The Universities Scheme was been set up to provide opportunities to students, alumni or members of faculty to join Freemasonry. The Duke of Connaught Lodge is one of two Lodges in the Province of Northumberland participating in the scheme.
The universities scheme was introduced by The Assistant Grand Master, David Williamson, and is actively supported within the province of Northumberland by the Provincial Grand Master, Peter Magnay DL. The objective of the scheme is ‘To establish and/or enhance arrangements and opportunities for undergraduates and other university members to enjoy Freemasonry’
The City of Newcastle upon Tyne has a long established university culture with more than 50,000 students studying at two of the UK’s major universities. The Provincial Grand Master has charged the Duke of Connaught Lodge with the task of attracting potential candidates for Freemasonry from Northumbria University.
The Duke of Connaught Lodge has an intrinsic link with the university as we have a number of younger members who are either current students at Northumbria University, Alumni, or members of faculty. After leaving university graduates normally join a lodge in their home town or where they are working, which would be supported by the Duke of Connaught Lodge.
Students, alumni or employees of Northumbria University who have an interest in Freemasonry in Newcastle upon Tyne are encouraged to get in touch with us. You can use the Contact Us section above, telling us a little bit about yourself and your reasons for wishing to join.
Arrangements will be made to meet you socially to find out more about you, and to give you a chance to find out more about us. You would then in due course be invited to meet a committee of members from the Lodge prior to being balloted for membership. All being well, a date would then be fixed for your admission.
Students of Newcastle University should contact Hotspur Lodge if they are interested in joining Freemasonry through the scheme. Alternatively, feel free to Contact Us and we will put you in touch with their Lodge Secretary.
